Dr. Maggio here. I wanted to give you a little tip on how to manage your stress. I notice that it is very common when people come in here that even though when I ask them “what’s going on” and they say “nothing,” there is a lot going on in their head. So what can you do that will only take a few minutes just to slow down your day, so that you can relax and enjoy life more?

Couple real simple tips. When you get home from a busy day at work, don’t go directly into the house. Especially if you live with people. They will bombard you with other information that you may not be ready to handle. Sit in your car for a couple minutes, play one of your favorite songs, keep some pictures in your car that you can flip through that will simply help you relax. This gives your mind a little mental shut off so when you walk in the door you able to mentally handle what’s coming towards you.

Pet therapy is widely used for Stress therapy. Pets are used in nursing homes, prisons, hospitals, and schools. This can reduce stress. It can also reduce loneliness, anger, depressio. Research in this area has shown that cardiac patient survival rates were higher for those who owned pets.  Pet owners make fewer visits to the doctor’s office. Significant decreases in resting heart rate and blood pressure, as well as mood changes, have also been observed when research subjects played with their pets. Similar physiological changes were seen among the animals, too. Amazing, right?

Thanks folks for your time and attention.

Holiday Stress and Pain

Holiday Stress is here. Whether you “gave in” and began listening to holiday music just after Halloween, or waited until the day after Thanksgiving, we’ll all agree that the holidays are now firmly upon us. The trees are out, the holiday displays are up, and gift lists are being created by and for those we hold dear. It’s a fun season. Holiday Stress and Pain is not fun.

But it’s also a stressful season. Physically, we’re carrying heavier bags than normal, we’re climbing ladders to put on those outdoor lights, and we’re doing more driving than is typical for us. Emotionally, we’re stretching our financial budgets, enduring the obligatory family chaos, attending more events and getting less rest. December is a very busy month.

They say that a chain tends to break at its weakest link. The same is true in our bodies. When you’re experiencing stress — even happy, holiday stress — the “weakest link” in your body will often cry out for attention. Some will exhibit stress through recurring headaches. Others will experience back pain, muscle stiffness or allergic reactions.

Regardless of how your body shows stress, chiropractic care can be tremendously helpful. You see, whenever you’re experiencing a “stress response,” your nervous system is involved. Using the ProAdjuster, I can visually show you where the weak links along your spine and central nervous system are located. And, of course, help you restore strength and function to that area. Holiday Stress and Pain is not fun. No one enjoys Holiday Stress and Pain.

Chiropractic adjustments will help you reduce the tension and stress carried by your central nervous system and improve your ability to navigate the stresses of the holiday season.

Black Friday Holiday Stress

Hey everybody! I hope you are ready for the holidays. You’re NOT, too bad cause they are still coming!

Black Friday Holiday StressOne of the things I want to talk to you about today is eating well. We find that during the holiday season people have much more to do. Whether its events at their kids school, or getting your holiday shopping done. For some people its last minute shopping, some people are planning out their list from the end of October all the way to Christmas. How can you help that? If you’re running around all over the place, especially if it’s at your lunch hour. One of the things you have a problem with is getting the right nutrition. So if you’re running around, and you’re behind schedule. The easy thing to do is stop at McDonalds, Wendy’s, chick-fil-a, etc. to pick something up that’s quick, but not nutritious. That’s not a good idea. Here are some of the things you can do.

When you know those days are coming, where you are going to be running around busy. Coming home late, taking time out your lunch break to run errands. Try keeping some healthy snacks with you. Healthy snacks are things like nuts, fruit, protein bars, we have Ideal protein bars that you can buy here in the clinic. Also keep water with you. This way you don’t feel overwhelmed, or rushed, trying to get your shopping done and stay on track with eating well. You won’t have blood sugar issues, when your blood sugar starts dropping you might feel a little anxious. Make sure you have quality food with you at all times, especially when running errands. This will help get you through the holiday season, and help with energy and better nutrition. I hope this helps you. Have a great day folks!

Virginia Beach Traffic

I want to share a story with you. Most of you know my wife Sara. She works here part time helping us out at the front office. When we were driving in here the other day Sara got very very mad at someone. And it was not me for a change! It was the Virginia Beach Traffic. It was actually the person driving on 264, who decided that they were going to drive in the lane that is “x” out. So, they were riding on the shoulder. There is an etiquette to driving and unfortunately in our area I do not think that exist. So, what happens when people get upset when they are driving, if they are doing the driving or sitting in the passenger’s seat. People have a reaction with their adrenal gland. Their adrenal gland explodes. In other words it starts to change your chemicals and your hormones in your body. This creates a high stress situation. How do you beat virginia beach traffic?

Let’s say it’s a day that you know the weather is going to be bad. And you know traffic is going to be bad. If you don’t take any steps to accommodate for that you are going to start your day off bad. You’re going to be stressed in the car. You’re going to be stressed when you walk into the front door of your job. When that happens, your day isn’t going to go as smooth. Your adrenal gland will start kicking in, you’ll fell stressed, overwhelmed, your blood pressure will go up. You just will not feel relaxed, like you drank too much coffee or too much soda. You’re going to get that hyper sensation. Here are a couple things you can do to avoid this.

Virginia Beach TrafficThe days you know we are going to have bad weather, get up earlier. It’s real simple, get up 10 minutes early, that way if you get stuck in traffic for 10 minutes it’s not a big deal. The other thing I highly recommend to calm yourself down is. When you get to where ever it is you need to go, where it’s at the end of day and you’re going home or you’re going to work. When you get there relax in the car for at least two minutes before you get out and walk in. For example, if your 28 years old and you have two or three kids and you get home from work. What’s going to happen when you walk in the door? The kids are going to bombard you with everything, mom help me with this, mom can you help me that. Happens all the time. Sit back, relax in the car for a couple minutes before you walk into the door will give you a chance to have your adrenal gland calm down. When your adrenal gland calms down you’ll stay looser and more relaxed.

Thanks folks, good luck driving in virginia beach traffic.
