Good afternoon folks. I had a question the other day that I get asked a lot. What do we do for a person if they have a ruptured disc? A ruptured disc means that the disc literally exploded. In my 20 years of practice, I’ve only seen that about three or four times, it’s just not common. What does happen a lot is when a patient talks to their doctor about disc problems there are so many different terms that sometimes patients just get confused. Most of the time what actually happens is not a rupture where it explodes. If that happens you need to see a Neurosurgeon. However, what normally happens is a disc bulge or herniation. Those terms are about the same. So let me show about how this works. If you look at the side view of the spine, the blue area is the disc. When the vertebra stop moving it can put pressure on the disc, and the disc will bulge backwards. The problem with that is when it does bulge backwards it bulges into the nerve root. If that counties to degenerate what happens is the disc starts shoving on the nerve. These are issues that we normally can handle here in the office. If it explodes and ruptures that when we need to send someone for a surgical consultation.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Chiropractic care and traction are good for disc problems. When being evaluated by your chiropractor xrays may be needed. If you are being treated and your symtopms do not improve, an MRI may be necessary.
