Numbness and tingling is a loss of sensation in a part of the body. Numbness typically happens in the hands or feet. It is often accompanied by tingling. This can feel like a pins and needles sensation. Numbness can occur on a single side of the body. It can also occur on both sides of the body.

What Causes Numbness?

Numbness is caused by irritation or damage to a particular nerve. The affected nerves are peripheral nerves. These are the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Many times it is easy to figure out what has caused the problem.

Limbs and  Numbness and Tingling

The most common cause of numbness and tingling occurs when a limb “falls asleep”. This can happen from being held in an unusual position for too long. This can occur due to abnormal pressure on a nerve. It can be quickly resolved by moving the affected limb back to a normal position. This is benign. There is no reason to see a doctor if it happens.

Repetitive Nerve Damage and Numbness and Tingling

Numbness and tingling can be related to localized nerve damage. This can happen by repetitive motions. The most common is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is produced by repetitive pressure on the median nerve. This is seen in people who use keyboards often.

Nerve Impingement Syndrome

If you have a pinched nerve, your body may send warning signals. These warning signals can feel like pain, numbness or tingling. Don’t ignore these warning signals. Damage from a pinched nerve may be minor or severe. It can cause temporary or long lasting problems. The earlier the diagnoses and treatment of the condition, the sooner you can get relief.

Other Causes

Diabetes is one of the most common causes of numbness in the hands and feet. This can be accounted for in approximately 30% of cases. Some systemic diseases such as kidney disorders, liver disease, connective tissue disorders, and chronic inflammation can impinge on nerves. Vitamin deficiencies such as Vitamins E, B1, B6, B12, and niacin are essential for healthy nerve function.

Chiropractic Care

Treatment for begins with an exam and proper diagnoses. This will determine the underlying cause of numbness and tingling. The aim is to eliminate irritation and restore proper function to the nerves. This is accomplished through spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation will take pressure off of the nerve. Thus reducing irritation.
