Back Injury Treatment
Back Problems and Injuries
Most people have back pain at one time or another. Symptoms can develop from everyday wear and tear, overuse or injury. Back injury can cause problems from the neck to the tailbone. The back includes bones of the spine (vertebrae). It includes the discs that separate the vertebrae. These absorb shock when you move. It also includes muscles and ligaments. These hold the spine together. Back injuries are the
most common cause of back pain. This happens when you use back muscles you do not typically use. This can happen lifting a heavy object or doing yard work. Back injuries may also occur from a car accident, fall or a direct blow.
How is Back Pain Diagnosed?
Before being treated, a doctor will need to diagnose the cause of the back injury. This can happen through a range of motion test. This will help pinpoint discomfort. X-rays will help indicate skeletal problems. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will help determine tissue damage. This can also help find herniated disks. Blood and urine test may be taken. This will roll out infection. Muscle or nerve damage can be found through EMG. An EMG is electromyogram. After diagnosis proper treatment can begin.
Injections
Injections may help back injury and inflammation. These consist of steroids. They also consist of numbing medicine. Injections treat inflammation or nerve damage. This problem occurs where the nerve exits the spine. Sharp pain can shoot down the leg. It can also shoot in the neck and arms. This all depends where the damaged nerve is. Injections also help spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is when the spine narrows. Spinal stenosis occurs when something is compressing on the nerves in the spine. It can be compressed by a herniated disc, bone spur or tumor. Not everyone gets the same relief with injections.
TENS Therapy
TENS therapy is a form of electrical stimulation. This can be helpful with those who have a back injury. A TENS unit targets nerve stimulation. It delivers a low voltage current through the skin. The electrical current stimulates the nerves. This sends a signal to the brain. It helps mask the pain perception. This therapy is not painful. TENS unit it used for pain relief.
Physical Therapy
Pain relief can be accomplished through physical therapy. Treatments help prevent and manage back injuries. Physical therapy helps restore function and movement. A physical therapist is trained in rehabilitation. A physical therapist may use passive or active therapy. Passive therapy involves heat/cold packs, electrical stimulation and TENS units. Active physical therapy includes stretching, strengthening exercises, and low impact aerobic exercise.
Chiropractor
About 22 million people annually get treated by chiropractors. About 7.7 million seek treatment due to back injury. These injuries include sports, muscle strains, and car accidents. Chiropractors manipulate the spine. This helps restore mobility to the joints. Proper alignment of the spine will help heal the body. This can be done without surgery or medication. Chiropractic care is used as an alternative for pain relief care. This helps with muscle, joints, bones, and connective tissue. Chiropractic care can be used with medical treatment.
