Your Neck Pain

4 Signs You Need to See a Chiropractor about Your Neck Pain

It’s possible you just “slept wrong,” maybe you pulled something, but for whatever reason when you turn your head from side to side, your neck really hurts and your movement is limited. We’ve all been there, self-massaging our neck and shoulders, maybe even applying a smelly lotion for pain relief, or turning to a medicinal anti-inflammatory… anything to get through the day.

Here’s how to know when your neck pain is bad enough to warrant a visit to your chiropractor, as well as a few tips for how to alleviate your neck pain at home.

First, how do you know if you should see your chiropractor?

  1. Your neck pain or stiffness persists for several days and doesn’t improve. Especially if your neck pain is worse when you first wake up and tends to get a bit better as the day goes on, chiropractic care can help.
  2. You need pain medication (over the counter or prescription) in order to make it through the day and avoid (or dread) looking left or right because of the pain.
  3. Your neck pain is now accompanied by numbness or tingling in your arms or hands.
  4. Your neck pain started within a few days after a car accident.

Dr. Maggio knows that neck pain is a common ailment, but that doesn’t make it normal. If you are experiencing neck pain, especially if it is worse upon waking, consider taking a hard look at your favorite pillow. When your pillow is too thin or too thick, it forces your neck to bend in an unnatural position throughout the night.

To alleviate neck pain, consider applying ice packs or frozen vegetables to your neck to reduce any swelling or inflammation. This will help alleviate the pain until you can get in to see your chiropractor.

Don’t make neck pain worse by compounding it with limited movement and additional stiffness. Instead try some light neck stretches, slowly turning your head from left to right without overextending your neck.

If you’re tolerating neck pain right now, or too often, call the office so we can help you out.

Lets first look at what actually causes neck pain, one of the most common causes of neck pain is a pinched nerve in the neck itself. Sometimes the vertebrae in the neck can get shifted and stuck in position. When a vertebrae gets stuck in position it will illicit pressure on the sensitive spinal nerves surrounding it causing pain. Some of these nerves radiate into the head and cause headaches while some radiate into upper back and down the arm and causes upper back pain, shoulder pain, arm pain and numbness in arm or hands.

The ProAdjuster (AKA Pulstar) system is an amazing instrument that allows the doctor to analyze the spine for proper mobility, thus checking for pinched or irritated nerves. When the test is done on the patient to determine if they have pinched and irritated nerves the doctor and the patient will get to see immediate feedback from the instrument on a computer screen.

Within moments the patient will find out if their neck pain is coming from a pinched and irritated nerves. If the nerve is pinched and irritated there are different treatments that can be done to help this patient. One of the most common treatments for a pinched nerve is chiropractic care. The ProAdjuster instrument can mobilize a vertebrae with a gentle high speed percussive tap that gently rock the vertebrae back into motion without any pain. The computer is so sensitive it will actually turn the instrument off as soon as the computer gets a reading that the vertebrae is moving as well as possible. The re- analysts can be done following that to determine how much improvement in the patients case.

This instrument is remarkable because it allow us to see if the vertebrae lack of mobility is caused from nerve irritation or if the patient should be sent to a different type of physician, get a massage, or if they can just do simple stretching on their own.
